Yes Sjaak, you're totally right. I was planning on boosting the image externally, but a few important clients demanded my attention and I forgot.

To boost images get external sites to show them directy from your site and place them on a page that has much focus internally. If you enter site:yourdomain.com in Google image search you often find that it mainly shows images from the homepage and other important places.

Alt-text and filenames for images seem to be the most underestimated technique in general SEO, even before Universal Search.
Have a look at this German statistical analysis:

http://www.sistrix.com/ranking-faktoren/

(search for "Bilder: Dateinamen" and "Bilder: Alternativ-Text")

Interesting hot topic these days. I think it might be a bit harder to rank for balkenende search results with the image you have, because there's already been quite some writing about that exact topic. But maybe your english will save you, since nobody has used the exact phrase yet...

So far it's also pretty obvious that images are only displayed on queries that make sense to have images. They can just use the image search data for that. So you better start firing up those bots to query a lot of mortgage image searches, or there won't be much bannering on Google, I'd guess ;)

@Gerben: You are absolutely right, these images can be used as a super banner. But your competitor will rat on you and it will be removed, because these extra searches aren't intended for banners. Another problem is that currently, Google only shows certain types of universal search with certain types of searches. You need to have a newsworthy topic to have news searches alongside the results and many images on a topic to have images appear. Universal search is still developing, so I'll wait to see what it will bring.

@Greg: So far video, images, news, local and books are the only ones that I've seen that weren't there before, but of course you still have: stock quotes, site links, translations and many more extra links. Google will probably try multiple settings and we are bound to see Google base (aka product search or Froogle) results as well. Most likely the items that show up will be based on personalized search (user behaviour or user settings) in the near future. Let's wait and see. We are bound to be surprised.

Hi,

You mentioned, "video, images, news, local or books." I am curious about which items Google has decided to include in Universal Search. Is this the exact list, or a few examples? Google lets you search blogs, patents, calendar events, etc. Do you happen to know which items they plan to include in Universal Search? Do you know any gossip about which items may be next?

Thanks.

Instead of using images/videos for PR (Public Relations, not PageRank), wouldn’t it be far more interesting to get images with advertisements to rank? Who cares about AdWords text-advertisements if you are able to get 140x100px ‘banners’ for free in top of the SERPs?
In the case of me being a car dealer it won’t work out: images and photos of cars are widely spread (reviews, shows, amateur photos, etc.). Audi A6 gets me over 244.000 image results and it will be difficult to beat the current images in the SERPs.
But now let’s take something like ‘mortgage refinance for example. Not really a topic you can ‘put in an image’. This actually means: no competition. So let’s optimize images (with promotional graphics/texts) for these topics!
Note: YouTube videos are doing very well in the Universal Search SERPs. Is any SEO optimizing videos for ‘mortgage refinance’ yet?
